Turkish Aviation Authority Finds
Manufacturing
Defect Caused Power Loss
MD600 helicopter crashed
on July 29, 2006
Ankara, Turkey—The
Turkish Aviation authority, SGDA, has found that a McDonnell Douglas MD600 helicopter
which crashed on July 29, 2006 in Antalya, lost engine power due to a manufacturing
defect.
O'Reilly & Danko represents the families of two of the crew,
Kudret Calik and Hakan Kaya.
The helicopter, which was newly in service, suffered from engine problems which
were traced to plastic particles in the fuel control unit. The control unit had
been returned to Rolls-Royce twice and had been returned as fixed. However, after
this crash, which killed all six aboard, plastic particles were again found in
the control unit.
Rolls-Royce took the engine for inspection and subsequently "lost" the
particles. Nonetheless, the SGDA observed the particles and determined that foreign
object damage caused the crash.
O'Reilly & Danko will file an action on behalf of the families
in Arizona, where the helicopter is built.
