Texting While Driving

Across the country, states are enacting laws to prevent people from texting while driving and limiting the use of cell phones while driving. 2008 saw the passage of a California law banning drivers 18 years of age or older from using hand-held wireless devices while driving. In 2009, California enacted a law that prohibits drivers from texting while driving, including reading any type of text on a wireless device. Though these laws have been in place for a few years now, drivers are constantly breaking the law and, as a result, other drivers are often injured.

Other Driver Distractions

While talking on cell phones and texting while driving are major factors in causing distracted driving accidents, there are numerous other causes:

  • Eating while driving
  • Talking on cell phones (either hand-held, speaker phone or through an ear piece)
  • Changing controls (radio, heating/cooling, etc.) while driving
  • Drivers with children in the car
  • Teenage drivers with other teenagers in the car
  • Examining GPS systems instead of the road
  • Applying makeup in the mirrors
  • Reading while driving
