San Francisco Closed Head Injury Attorney
What is the difference between an open head injury and a closed head injury? As the name implies, an open head injury involves a serious fracture of the skull, causing bone and other matter to depress or puncture the multiple dura layers protecting the brain itself. The injury can lead to dangerous infections and swelling of the brain.
A closed head injury, on the other hand, can appear to leave no outward sign of traumatic brain injury but can, in fact, lead to permanent brain damage. A closed head injury often results from a sudden whipping action of the head, whether or not the skull came into contact with a hard object. These types of "whiplash" brain injuries can result in what is known medically as a contrecoup brain injury, in which the brain is pushed over the brain stem and compresses the spinal column. The most commonly recognized type of a closed head injury is a concussion.
Some symptoms of brain damage from a closed head injury include:
- Short-term and permanent memory loss
- Blurred vision, hearing loss, headaches
- Tingling sensation or numbness in feet and hands
- Loss of cognitive ability, inability to complete simple tasks
- Personality change, often irritability
Family members should talk to a doctor about these symptoms.
